Before you book: what the manufacturers say
Most repair calls start with one of a few symptoms. Treadmill and bike makers publish their own checks for them, and some are owner jobs that take a few minutes. Here is the short version of that advice, with a link to the full guide for each machine and brand.
Treadmill belt slips or stops
If the belt hesitates under your foot, iFIT, the maker of NordicTrack and ProForm, starts with tension: both rear roller screws, a quarter turn at a time. A belt that bogs down can be the opposite problem, because iFIT warns that an overtightened belt strains the drive motor. If it still slips, Sole points to the drive belt under the motor cover, which is a job for a technician.

A click on every pedal stroke most often starts at the pedals. Schwinn and Bowflex name debris on the pedal threads, and Matrix reminds owners that the left pedal is reverse threaded and keeps loosening. For resistance, Peloton issues a calibration kit when the brake cannot read 0 or 100, and an Echelon bike has resistance only when it is plugged in and paired with the app.

The same number means different things on different machines. Sole prints a code table in its treadmill manuals, where E01 is over current protection and E31 is overtemperature. iFIT publishes no numeric codes for NordicTrack or ProForm home equipment, so the lists on forums have no manufacturer source. The Peloton Tread uses red lights instead of codes.

Labor is usually the shortest part of a warranty. NordicTrack, ProForm and Sole cover only the original purchaser, so a machine bought second-hand has no factory coverage. Sole and iFIT exclude damage caused by outside service, while Peloton says the mere use of an outside provider does not void its warranty. Inside the labor warranty, call the manufacturer first.

NordicTrack and ProForm manuals say not to place the machine in a garage, and Sole's 2026 warranty is void outside a climate controlled, insulated room. After cold exposure, NordicTrack asks you to let the treadmill warm to room temperature before turning on the console. Sole, Precor and Peloton all want a grounded circuit the treadmill does not share with other devices.
Peloton Bike and Tread
Peloton's warranty covers components and labor for 12 months and the frame for 5 years, and it does not transfer to a second-hand buyer. Some repairs are free recalls, such as the seat post on the original Bike, model PL01. On the Tread, Peloton asks owners to check belt tension every month and to lubricate the belt every 3 years.

Both brands are made by iFIT and share its support site. iFIT says the belt generally needs lubricant no more than once a year, allows only its own lubricant and forbids silicone spray. A frozen touchscreen has a pinhole factory reset that takes two people, and iFIT says not to try it more than twice. iFIT sells parts for out-of-warranty machines directly.

On a Sole, lubrication is the owner's job: 100% food grade silicone every 90 hours of use or every 90 days, and Sole says skipping it may void the warranty. When the treadmill trips its own breaker, Sole names one cause, high friction between belt and deck. On Sole ellipticals, 90% of noise calls trace back to loose hardware or dirty rear rails.
