ProForm machines tend to stop for a short list of reasons: the walking belt slips or wanders to one side, the power switch keeps tripping, the incline stops answering, an elliptical or bike loses its resistance or starts to knock. Boost Gym Service repairs ProForm treadmills, ellipticals and exercise bikes at home across 11 New Jersey counties.

ProForm is made by iFIT, the same company behind NordicTrack, and its owners use the same iFIT support site. Everything technical below comes from current ProForm owner's manuals, iFIT support articles and the recall notices of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

ProForm treadmills: the faults and what the manual says

These are the steps from the troubleshooting section of a current ProForm treadmill manual, the Carbon Pro 9000, and from iFIT's support articles, which cover ProForm and NordicTrack alike.

  • The treadmill shuts off during a workout. The power switch on the frame doubles as a circuit breaker. If it has tripped, the manual says to wait five minutes before pressing it back in. If it keeps tripping, have it diagnosed.
  • The belt slips when you step on it. The fix is tension. With the key removed and the cord unplugged, turn both idler roller screws at the rear clockwise a quarter turn. The belt is right when you can lift each edge 2 to 3 inches off the walking platform. iFIT adds that both sides should get the same turn, and names a 3/16 or 7/32 inch hex key.
  • The belt is too tight. The manual warns that an overtightened belt lowers performance and can damage the belt. The cure is a quarter turn counterclockwise on both screws.
  • The belt runs off center. ProForm corrects it at the left idler roller screw only, a half turn at a time, with the cord unplugged: clockwise if the belt has moved left, counterclockwise if it has moved right. Then walk on it for a few minutes and repeat.
  • The console is on but the belt will not move. iFIT's first checks are the safety key, unplugging for 30 seconds, and starting the belt at 1 mph while listening for the motor. The next steps in that article are under the motor hood, and the ProForm manual tells owners never to remove the motor hood unless an authorized service representative instructs them to. That is the point to call support or a technician.
  • The incline does not move. iFIT's order is power and safety key, then incline calibration, then a power cycle, and only then the wiring. On touchscreen models calibration is in the menu: Maintenance, Calibrate Incline, Begin. The frame climbs to its maximum, drops to its minimum and returns.
  • The touchscreen freezes. The manual describes a reset through a pinhole button on the console, done by two people while the power is switched on, and it erases your settings. iFIT says not to try it more than twice. Bluetooth consoles without a touchscreen have no reset button.
  • The outlet or breaker trips. iFIT notes that treadmills may trip GFCI outlets and asks owners to use an outlet on a dedicated circuit. If an AFCI breaker trips, the manual's answer is an arc filter.

ProForm ellipticals and bikes: resistance, noise, dark consoles

iFIT publishes one set of steps for bikes and ellipticals, and the ProForm manuals add a few model specific details.

  • No change in resistance. iFIT's sequence: unplug for 30 seconds, then test the lowest and highest levels in a manual workout and watch whether the console shows the change. Next, stand beside the machine, change the level and listen for the short hum of the resistance motor. Popping or clicking from that motor means it may need replacement. Last comes the wiring between the resistance motor and the controller.
  • CH0 or CH1 on a ProForm bike console. On the Pro Trainer 500 this message means the resistance system needs recalibration. The manual's method: remove the console batteries, hold any button for 20 seconds, release it and put the batteries back. The bike returns to the lowest level.
  • Pedals slip under load. iFIT points to the drive belt. On the Carbon EL elliptical the manual's adjustment is behind an access cover: loosen the idler screw, tighten the adjustment screw, retighten. Unplug the machine before removing any cover.
  • Noise while pedaling. iFIT's list starts with a machine that rocks on an uneven floor, then side shields or covers rubbing the frame, then hardware that has worked loose from vibration. On a bike, popping, clicking or grinding while the incline moves points to the incline motor.
  • The console stays dark. On the Pro Trainer 500, the manual says most console problems come from low batteries. On machines with an adapter, iFIT's checks are unplugging for 30 seconds, the outlet, the adapter, the lights on the controller and the wires.

ProForm error codes

iFIT publishes no list of numeric error codes for ProForm home equipment. Numbered codes found online do not come from iFIT, and the manuals describe faults by symptom.

What iFIT does document is a handful of messages. "Uh-oh" can show even with the safety key attached; iFIT's checks are the right key for the console and the wire connectors under the console. HELLO or IFIT on a new Bluetooth console that beeps means it has not been activated yet, which is not a fault. CH0 or CH1 on the Pro Trainer 500 bike means the resistance needs recalibration.

Lubrication, folding and the motor hood

The walking belt arrives coated with lubricant. The manual forbids silicone spray or any other substance on the belt or the walking platform unless an authorized service representative tells you otherwise, because such substances can wear out the belt. iFIT allows only its own lubricant and says a belt generally will not need it more than once a year. To check, unplug the treadmill, lift the belt edge and feel the middle of the platform: a slight shine on your fingers means there is still lubricant.

Many ProForm treadmills fold, the Carbon Pro 9000 and the Carbon TLS among them, and the manual's folding rules are safety rules. Before you walk away from a folded treadmill, make sure the storage latch is holding the frame. Never run it folded. Set the incline to its lowest position before folding, plan on lifting about 45 pounds, and move it with two people. Do not leave it folded in temperatures above 85°F. Keep children under 16 and pets away from the treadmill at all times.

The motor hood is the line between owner work and service work. Servicing beyond the procedures in the manual, the manual says, belongs to an authorized service representative. If the belt still slips after the tension steps, the owner's part ends there.

Garage, power and cold weather

ProForm manuals for treadmills, ellipticals and bikes say not to place the machine in a garage or on a covered patio, or near water. The treadmill needs 8 feet of clear space behind it and 2 feet on each side, with a mat underneath. The warranty adds weight to this: it is voided if any instruction or warning in the manual is not followed.

If a treadmill has been exposed to cold, the manual asks you to let it warm to room temperature before turning on the console.

Power comes with a specification of its own: a grounded outlet on a nominal 120 volt circuit able to carry 15 amps or more, and a surge suppressor listed to UL 1449 and rated for 120 volts and 15 amps.

ProForm warranty: the terms differ by model

ProForm's terms range widely, so read the back cover of your manual. Current examples: the Carbon Pro 9000 treadmill has 10 years on the frame, 2 years on parts and 1 year on the tablet and labor. The Carbon TLS treadmill and the Carbon EL elliptical have 10 years on the frame and 1 year on parts and labor. The Sport treadmill has 3 years on the frame and 90 days on parts and labor. The Pro Trainer 500 bike has 1 year on the frame and 90 days on parts and labor.

The rest of the terms are shared. Coverage starts on the date you receive the machine. It extends only to the original purchaser and is not transferable, so a ProForm bought used has no factory warranty. iFIT must preauthorize every warranty repair and carries it out through its own authorized service providers, and the owner may pay a handling charge for shipped parts or a trip charge for an in-home visit. Commercial or rental use, use as a store display model and modifications without iFIT's written permission void the warranty, and iFIT's warranty article excludes repairs not provided by an iFIT authorized service center.

So the order is simple. Inside the warranty, contact iFIT at my.iFIT.com or the number printed on the manual cover; the manual itself asks owners not to contact the store. After the warranty, or on a machine bought second-hand, the repair is yours to arrange, and that is the work we do.

Parts, older consoles and recalls

iFIT sells parts for out-of-warranty ProForm equipment through iconservice.com. Parts typically leave the warehouse within 3 to 5 business days and arrive within 10 to 14 business days.

On August 7, 2023 iFIT ended software support for touchscreen treadmills, bikes and ellipticals made from 2011 through 2016. iFIT states that those machines still run in manual mode, so an old screen without classes is not a broken treadmill.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission lists three ProForm recalls, none of them for a current treadmill, elliptical or bike. In July 2024, ProForm 50 lb adjustable dumbbells, model PAMSDB20, because the weight plates can come loose from the handle; the remedy is a free replacement tray. In March 2002, the ProForm TrailRunner hiker, model PFHK9990, for a control component that could overheat; the remedy was a free repair. In July 1997, the Pro Form R-930 Space Saver Rider, model PFCR64060, which could fold into its storage position during use; the remedy was a free repair kit.

ProForm repair: common questions

Is this ProForm customer service?▼
No. Boost Gym Service is an independent repair company and is not affiliated with or authorized by ProForm or iFIT. ProForm's own support is iFIT: the manuals send owners to my.iFIT.com or to 1-833-680-4348, and out-of-warranty parts are sold at iconservice.com.
Do you repair ProForm treadmills near me?▼
If you are in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Somerset and Union counties in New Jersey, yes. A technician comes to your home for slipping or off-center belts, tripping switches, incline faults, dead or frozen consoles and noise. Call (551) 553-3822 with the model number.
Do you repair ProForm ellipticals and exercise bikes?▼
Yes. The common faults are resistance that does not change, pedals that slip, knocking or clicking, wrong readings and a dark console. iFIT's owner checks come first; if they do not help, call us.
What do ProForm error codes mean?▼
iFIT publishes no numeric error codes for ProForm home equipment, so the code lists found online have no manufacturer source. The documented messages are "Uh-oh" (safety key and console wiring), HELLO or IFIT (console not yet activated) and CH0 or CH1 on the Pro Trainer 500 bike (resistance recalibration).
How do I fix a ProForm treadmill belt that slips or runs to one side?▼
Unplug it first. For slipping, turn both rear idler roller screws a quarter turn clockwise until each edge lifts 2 to 3 inches. For a belt off center, turn only the left screw half a turn: clockwise if the belt moved left, counterclockwise if it moved right.
Does an independent repair affect my ProForm warranty?▼
While the machine is under warranty, repairs must be preauthorized by iFIT and done by its service providers, and iFIT excludes repairs not provided by its authorized service centers. Use iFIT first. After the warranty, or on a machine bought used, there is no factory coverage left to affect.
How much does ProForm treadmill repair cost?▼
It depends on the part that failed. Call (551) 553-3822 with the model number and the symptom, and ask for the cost of the diagnostic visit before you book.
Which areas do you cover?▼
Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Somerset and Union counties in New Jersey. We do not travel outside the state.
